Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken
Volendam and Marken were originally ports on the Zuiderzee (southern sea). When the Dutch constructed the Afsluitdijk (English: Enclosing Dike) in 1932 the Zuiderzee became the lake that we now call the IJsselmeer. Volendam is still a fishing town and it is most famous for its original Dutch costumes. Come join us on the tour to Volendam and have your picture taken in this typically Dutch dress. We’ll also visit an authentic Dutch cheese factory. Next to it is Marken, also a fishing town, and here you will see how we make Dutch wooden clogs!
The Zaanse Schans gives you a good idea of how the Dutch lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Around the Zaan lake you will see many original windmills and of course lots of water. These mills were used for all kinds of purposes. We will walk through this area and visit an authentic windmill.
