Every year about 1.4 million people visit Keukenhof Gardens. This place is famous for its many types of flowers. However, near Keukenhof Gardens there are interesting ways to spot the flowers. In this article I’ll give you some inside information, not commonly known by visitors.
Next to many flowers, The Netherlands is also known for its many bikes. These two combined give you the perfect opportunity to spot the flowers. Many flowers are located in the Flower bulb area between the cities of Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden. The best way to go there is by bike.
Rent a bike to come closer to the flowers
So if you really want to go Dutch: rent a bike! Cycling in The Netherlands is almost a tradition. The Dutch learn how to cycle at a very young age. However, do not cycle in Amsterdam. People don’t like cycling tourists there. On the other hand, the flower bulb area is perfectly suited for cycling and especially to visit the flowers. You could also go cycling to Keukenhof Gardens. Don’t underestimate the distance, especially if you’re not an experienced cyclist. Its about 50 minutes from Leiden. Renting a bike is also not that difficult. It should cost you about € 10.00 per bike per day. Furthermore there are many different bike paths you could choose from.
See more than the flowers
There is also more to see in this area than flowers. The Flower bulb area has, besides many flowers, also some beautiful old castles and authentic cheese farms – not like the touristic ones in Volendam or Amsterdam. If you are in or around Leiden or Amsterdam you could try a guided bike tour. You’ll learn stories about the area: buildings, flowers, cheese and windmills. It departs from March to May every year.
